11. Lange Nacht der Museen

2010
Exhibition

During the Long Night of the Museums 2010 KISD exhibited an urban experience by presenting the two cities Barcelona and Cologne. The results of the project »Que pasa en la calle« and a photography project, which took place in Barcelona as well, were exhibited.

The conept of the exhibition deals with urban landscapes. Cardboard stacks imitated a city scape. The stacks were used as a display for pictures and projections. The shown content was commented and questioned to give the visitor new impressions and a critical thought-provoking impulse. To introduce the topic, several dia slide-projectors featuring images of Barcelona were set up in the entrance hall.

Wooden Post cards

How can a post card look new and how can you make it different or more interesting compared to the ubiquity of current paper postcards?

Wood Cards is a project that gives a new face to the touristic commodity of post cards. With an emphasis on the trend of industrial laser cutting, these cards are all about the rapidity of the rising industrial aesthetic. Originally the project was made out a need for a little extra cash, has since become a hot commodity and can be found in a couple of stores throughout San Francisco and Cologne. Available in a number of iconic symbols akin to the bay area culture.

Corporate Design

Frank Rose wanted to have a new corporate design which communicates his business in a clear way. This contains brand, business papers as well as a website and a communication concept.

The difficulty was to combine two different divisions he is dealing with. During the process I figured out, that it would be better for him to separate these divisions visually and regarding content. To solve this problem, I had to come up with an concept which deals with both divisions. On the one hand each brand should be clearly separated from each other and working as a single brand and on the other hand they should have an connection to each other.

Both brands have an own main logo and an own subtitle, which gives you more informations about the specific business and it connects both brands by using the main color of the opposite brand. The form stays basically the same but color and slogan are changing.

Concept Phone for City-Surfers

MAPP. is a concept phone designed for the needs of City-Surfers, young city travellers who loves to explore and experience new cultures on their spare time. Mapp facilitates the user experience by way of navigation throughout a city unknown.

The Design process included technology research as well as field research. Interviews with people in this target group and online research in different forums and websites helped to figure out the needs and opportunities to be designed for this target group.

The driving navigation feature works by pointing on a target and showing the air distance. While typical tourist spots are not so interesting for the city surfer, rather, they are more interested in cultural exchange and social experience of a city. Surfing leads the user to places in town where the most mobiles devices are, for a higher chance of meeting new people.

By putting two phones together, the user has the opportunity to charge his or the opposite phone and offers an exchange of data, contacts and friendships (couch surfing, facebook, linkup, …) conveniently. The experience becomes more rich and is not simply a cold exchange of data anymore.

The concept also includes a diary. It shows you where you have been and organizes the taken pictures or sound files automatically. Furthermore you can see where and when you meet a specific person the first time.

Corporate Design

For the BIRD-Conference 2009 I created the corporate design. This includes concept, communication material (brochure, poster and website) and orientation system during the conference. The title of the conference »Design research as an elastic discourse« should be reflected in the corporate design.

The conference was visited by ca. 130 participants. 13 internationally famous scientists participated as advisors and discussed in an open discourse.

The main sponsor of the conference is »Birkhäuser« a publishing house located in Basel, Switzerland. The Confernce takes places every year with a different topic. Next time 2010 in New York (USA).

Form Study

In the scientific seminar »6-Corners, 3-Dimensions« hexagonal structures were analysed using the following criteria: form, aesthetics, function, culture and statics. Several three dimensional formal experiments emerged from this analysis, which then were printed using rapid prototyping technology.

With paper models, drawings and 3D-models complex hexagonal structures were invented.

Pixialation Animation

In the project »Timebandits« a so called Pixilation-Animation was created and as a loop presented during the »Passagen 2009« as a part of an exhibition. An orange figure is following the rhythm of a human machine and passes trough different processes. Like a clockwork it is repetitive and never ending. The repetition reflects our every-day routines. There is a great deal of input into the orange figure, however it undergoes no real change of state.

During three days producing we took all together more than 3000 pictures for 13 sequences. The produced movie is about 2,5 minutes.

Logo Design

The task was to create a brand for a new power drink called »Super Sabor«.

The project started by a short research how different other brands look and work. We figured out, that most logos of similar companies work with a mark designation and without any blip. This was the driving insight to create a logo based on a strong blip.

I came up with two possible solutions. Both solutions are dealing with physical power and speed. They can be used in different color variations to show flavours.

Temporary consistence of typography in public space

2007
Documentation

The documentation »Temporäre Beständigkeit« (temporary consistence) originated during the conversion of the project »Wortweg«.

The book exhibits observations of typographical appearances over a four week period on the stretch of way.

The concept considers the diversity of observations that serve as a basis for a predetermined inconsistent grid whose surface areas change their color on each page of the book. The single chapters guide the observer through the Way of Words. Each single section is related to a certain color that can be found in seven different nuances.
